Hi I'm new to the board. I was absolutely thrilled to find Brendas articles on "walking the horse into gait".I'm fairly new to gaited horses and training my first, a 3 1/2 year old Racking Horse gelding. I have been searching for advise on how to develop his rack and this is the first place that actually makes sense to me. I think I can do it
I have also been clicker training my boy since the moment he hit the ground. Love it and he has turned into such a fun horse!
As far as riding I started him at 3 and have been doing only walk. Bending, serpentines, circles, moving the hip and shoulders, giving the nose, neck, dropping the head. We are currently in a fat D-ring snaffle.
I have worked a little on asking him to give to 2 reins. I pick up the buckle to my chest, wait for him to give to it, release. Then I did buckle to my chest and slid a hand down to give to one rein to the side while his nose is tipped in. Once he was doing that I would pick up the outside rein, so he's giving, on a shorter rein with both hands on contact. Then I was planning to gradually build up the steps he can stay there. Is this the way to do it?
After I get the walk to the breakover point consistant? Start asking him to walk really fast while giving to me on contact?
Hope this is in the right place, I have a clicker question to go along with that.
As far as building up the walk. How can I add the clicker to it? Bump him up and click for the increase. Gradually withhold the click to build duration. Bump him up a little fast and build that up? How do you do it? Hope this makes sense. I need things broken down to the simplest form in order to understand it and have a plan to then go out and teach it to my horse.
Hi Anne, welcome to the MB. I am sure there will be some very knowledgable people to answer your question. I am new to training riding horses myself!
