A friend of mine just told me about Gaits of Gold. I am so glad . I had heard of Brenda Imus but I didn't realize this message board existed. I have been around TWH's my entire life (and that has been along time) and it sickens me to think of what these horses have to endure. I still to this day cannot understand why the Federal Government in it's infinite wisdom has not put an end to the use of stacks and chains.
This article makes a powerful statement, but the responses are even more compelling. I realize there are over 330 responses, but one needs to read them all to really get a feel for what those fighting to end this practice are really up against - ignorance and denial are but two of the words that come to my mind.

I read the article you posted and I do believe there are two sides to every coin. While it is true soring goes on and will probably continue to go on with some despite our best efforts. There is I think a valid point made about USDA inspectors not knowing how to truly inspect a horse, which causes alot of problems. Just imagine for a moment you have your horse at a show, you take your horse to be inspected (and you know your horse has never been sored in anyway), but these inspectors prod, push, ect. your horse flinches, he also has a spot with loss of hair (from any number of things) and they site you for soring. What does that do to your name, not to mention if you are a trainer. You are banned from showing from 3 months to year.
I agree we need to have them inspected, but let's make sure that the person doing the inspecting is a certified horseman. That know's what they are looking for, what is normal and what is not. I have heard many that do not object to being inspected, but have objected to the inspection process and the way it was handled. I think both need improving.

| I think some of the problems will be resolved, probably not all, as trainers learn new methods. I also believe that as inspectors become better educated and equipment for testing improves, more and more of the problems will be iradicated. It will also take judges and the viewing public to help make changes. When owners will no longer allow these things to be done to their animals, trainers will change. My biggest hope is that what is going on in the TWH world, will have some inflience on the rest of the show horse world.

The best all around solution, IMO? Simply stop the practice of showing TWH's with stacks, pads, and weighted shoes. . .teach judges how to reward the 'real deal,' and how to recognize the signs of horses who have been trained using artificial methods and devices.
As long as there is any 'market' for the BL horse. . .there will be inhumane practices.

While the stacks, weights and chains are one part of it. It's interesting how little attention is given to the other forms of abuse endured with these guys.
A friend of mine told me about how they get that "bug eyed" look from the TWH
with the use of shocking the face just before they are put in the ring.

| When I told a young friend in the TWH world that the newest technique was temporarily blinding horses in the showring (they pick those feet wayyyy up when they can't see the ground under them), she couldn't believe it. Talking to a trainer she knows confirmed the practice. She loves TN Walkers and this breaks her heart.

Let's all (individually) write our state's representatives. . .and ask for the 'end' of any form of Big Lick showing. Guys: make a CASE! There are no humane methods - nor reasons for - showing a 'Big Lick' Walking Horse. NONE. I've started this thread in the past, and followed through, personally. Fortunately, there's been some progress since then - let's try to build on that.
Abuse. . .will continue . That's the nature of human ego-ism. But this extraordinary form of sanctioned horse abuse should be ABOLISHED. And sooner, rather than later.
While horse abuse is horrible - it's not really all about that. It's about the collective state of human consciousness. Let's do what we can to elevate it (her), in our own realm. . . Every little bit DOES count, more than we know.
Truly: Just my HO.

A copy of this Bonnie Erbe article would be a good place to begin their education...
