| i have a question i hope someone can answer. my friend has a horse who's feet are splitting and not growing very much. the farrier said she either needs shoes all the way around or boots. well due to the horses losing their shoes so often we have decided to do boots. we measured from front to back and side to side on the widest part. she is 5 x5 exactly. so when we look at the boots, the width will be 4 3 and the length 41.( something like that) if she is a size 2 due to her width but a size 1 due to the length, what size do we use?

It all depends on the boot you want to purchase. I think there are also pads and foam you can use to help fit. Here are a few articles and sites that might help.

Pete Ramey also has an article about Hoof Casts that you might be of interest.

Hi, my riding friends and I have recently bought boots for our 3 horses, all different types... a Walkaloosa, a TB and an Arabian. We all decided on EasyCare boots, but different styles. The only thing that these horses have in common is that they are barefoot...
I bought Epics with gaitors (love them on my gaited horse with 5X5 hoofs like you described, size 2, must have inexpensive clips sold separately if you're riding on very rocky ground)... the owner of the TB found the Easyboot Boas better for her horse after trying the Bare boots unsuccessfully (5X5 hoofs, too..she lost dial covers on rocky ground which company replaced free, and suggests duct taping them on next time for extra security), and the Arabian owner uses EasyCare Bare boots (5X5 hoofs, too), no problems even on rough terrain. Our horses hoofs have tiny 1-2 cm differences, but all fit into the size 2 catagory according to the size charts.
The company was very helpful when called about fitting issues & the lost dial covers, replaced them free and was super kind. If you should decide on Easyboots of any sort, I can recommend their service after the sale.
We found that different online sales outlets had very different return policies, so I would have to recommend checking that aspect out carefully if fit is an issue. The excellent links above should be very useful in making your choice!
Best wishes for finding the right fit...

| The boots will have to fit the length of the hoof or you can't get them on. My RMH was kind of between an Easy Boot size 1 and 2 (of which I had both but neither fit well darn). I didn't like the idea of the Boas and Old Macs, etc., coming up around the fetlock in case it chafed, so I bought Easy Boot Epics size 2. They appear to fit okay and I like the gaiter coming up around the fetlock and fastening tighter then the Boas would do and the back of the boot was closed so he couldn't step on it and pull it off. Due to the heat I haven't ridden, so actually don't know if they work or not. I have them as a spare in case of a lost shoe.

| I have easy boot epics for my RMH and they work great even in mud and water. Stayed on, did not rub. Size 2 is what I bought

Wow, look at all the size 2s. I have two geldings that both wear a Size 1 and two mares that both use a size 0
Easycare has a sizing guide on their website. Measure Front to back and right to left and compare to the sizing guide.
Most of the Easyboots have some adjustment in the boot themselves. On my BAREs I can move a screws into one of 3 holes on each side of the boot., giving me a total of 6 different tightness levels. Plus I can put in the regualr flat pad or the dome pad or no pad to help fill the boot.
With the Epics you not only can move the screw around a little, but you have multiple positions for the cables depending on where you lay the cable across the buckle.
And of course you could always put a wrap of Duct tape on the hoof before putting the boot on if you needed a little space filled in. So lots of flexiblity for not having the perfect fit.

| I have found that one of the easiest ways to get the hoof measurement is to get a piece of paper (8-1/2x11) or cardboard, put it under the horse's hoof. Set the hoof down on the paper and then with a pen, trace the outline. Then you can locate the widest part and draw a line across it, and also the longest. Then you have your measurement. It just seems easier then trying to measure a hoof that you're holding in the air.

| on the sizing chart it doesn't have 5x5. so do i go with the width more that the length? or vice versa? the duct tape idea does sound like it would work.

This is the new calculator..you put in you measurements and they tell you what size boots you need.
They came up with size 2 for the 5x5 sizehttp://http://www.easycareinc.com/calculator2.aspx

I have been using boots for years. When I got my Foxtrotter 2 years ago,I got her a pair of Cavallos simple boot and a pair of Deltas(also made by Cavellos) She can not gait very well in them, but the boots fit and stay on and are very easy to get on. I have been wanting to try the Epics, but I have been told they are very hard to put on. How do you like them and wondering if they will last as long.I have gotten 2 years out of the Cavllelos?
